Two words.... Silk. Blouse.

The Christmas season is almost upon us as indictated by the "one day sale" ploys that most of the major highstreet retailers resorted to this week. In fairness it must be difficult coaxing  people into the shops  now that the recession has snowballed (yes its snowing right now!) into a depression. While its too early for a piece on perfect presents and stocking fillers just yet, it is never too early to begin selecting holiday outfits, well if you're me anyway and think of clothing combinations like mathletes do... well, maths. Christmas is probably the most enjoyable but hectic time of year for most people so being fashionably prepared will save you time, effort and money. As the title explains your wardrobe essentials this holiday season should and by should I mean must include a silk blouse. Why you ask? Well personally, my love affair with the garment began back in August when I spotted a picture of Alexa Chung in a beautiful champagne coloured shirt at a Mulberry party in L.A. Ms. Chung rarely puts a fashionable foot wrong, but this outfit for me, cemented her status as a fashion icon. She demonstrated she can literally throw on a shirt and Levi's and will still be the most stylish person at the party. Following suit, I purchased my first silk shirt of the season, a loose cream Rag and Bone. I have since bought three more ( a tad extravagant and unnecessary but I have/will wear them well and love them dearly so its justifiable!). I have realised that a silk blouse can take you anywhere  and will over the holidays when combined with the appropriate attire. So I've categorised this blog by event, style and outfit for some practical advise on holiday blouse wear and to prove to myself that I will wear my purchases.

Event: Annual Chritsmas Dinner with friends.
Inspiration: Clemence Posey
Style: colour blocking
Ensemble: I love the oversized  1970's pussy-bow blouse juxtaposed against the cobalt blue skirt! Since bare legs are a must for this outfit, perhaps a cigarette leg trouser in a bright red would stave off the cold a little better for those who aren't as fearless of the Chrismas freeze. The contrast of the slim fitting trouser against the bold, relaxed-fit shirt will also create interesting silhouettes especially when finished with red shoes and a mid length camel cape coat and a neat clutch.

Occasion: Christmas Eve family dinner
Inspiration: Fashionistas from Ashley Olsen to Leighton Meester love Erdem's wintry prints.
Style: Lady-like.
Attire: An Erdem inspired printed silk blouse paired with a cinched-waist, full, midi-length skirt in navy. Complete the look with a  black  fitted dress coat with the skirt peeking out below and shoes in a contrasting but complimentary print to add a playful take on clashing and print and bring a youthful flair to this demure outfit. Alternatively, Asos White blue chiffon skirt could work well if cut to just below the knee and accompanied by some freeze friendly booties.

Outting: Racing, St. Stephen's day.
Inspiration:  Olivia Palermo
Style: Country City Clash
What I would wear: The races is always a tricky one, to wear something that's functionally warm but pub-approriate and nightclub appropriate is difficult and the day is long so comfort is key. Ok, so I'm going to start with a pair of skinny black cords and a waxed barbour jacket. Nip the waist of the coat with a leopard print skinny belt. Shearling lined boots will keep your feet warm (there are many cheaper takes on the burberry pair that catapulted the trend to the fashion forefront). Hiding underneath, Rag and Bone's cream silk blouse can be worn all buttoned up. An elaborate necklace adds glamour with a suede caridgan. Finally a printed scarf, leather driving gloves and a warm hat to shield your perfectly coiffed tresses from the elements.

Celebration: New years Eve
Inspiration:  Maria Sharapova
Style: New year Sparkle
Outfit: Play with textures this new year. Sequin Gyrphon shorts epitomise new year glitz, balance them with a simple black blouse and a burgundy velvet jacket. A bold black coaktail ring, shoe boots  and slighlty dishevelled hair complete the look.

So there's a few treasures to keep your fashion heart pulsating until the doom and gloom of Christmas exams/ essays are behind us all. Maybe menswear or a hot designer du jour next time... we shall see x
